Liszt – Grandes Études de Paganini, S.141 (1838, revised in 1851)

Having just arrived in Paris from Vienna in 1831, “Le petit Liszt” heard Paganini (1782 -1840) for the first time, and was entranced by the unfettered expressiveness of his playing.
“What a man, what a violinist, what an artist!” the 20-year-old immediately declared his desire to effectively create, on the piano, the equivalent in technical facilities and expressive potential in the same way that Paganini had done for the violin.

One of Liszt’s attempts to reach the strata of virtuosity and genius he had witnessed in Paganini was completed in 1838 and revised 13 years later. This set, primarily called Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini, consisted of six etudes that were all (except for no.3) transcriptions of the 24 Caprices for solo violin, Paganini’s op.1 (1802-1817). The Etudes were dedicated to Clara Schumann.

Liszt: Sonata in B minor, S. 178

Like many works regarded today as unquestionable masterpieces, the Sonata in B minor, completed in 1853, experienced also a difficult birth.

As a reciprocal gesture, Liszt dedicated the Sonata to Robert Schumann, after his dedication to Liszt of his Fantasy in C major (1839). His wife, Clara Schumann, found the piece “a blind noise” and her opinion was not atypical. This new music with a new form of expression and structure provoked a minor scandal among the conservative critics after its première in 1857, in Berlin. On the other hand, great musicians like Richard Wagner were immediately thrilled by this work, considering it “beyond all conception beautiful”.

As a curiosity, one can say this CD remains dedicated to one distinguish family – and what a family – Schumann, Clara & Robert saw both these works being dedicated to them, respectively.
